Running in Amsterdam: the Venice of the North

4 min read

Amsterdam is not only the capital of the Netherlands, it is also a city unlike any other in the world, where history, architecture and the art of living blend harmoniously. Exploring the city on foot is an opportunity to delve into its past whilst enjoying its unique urban landscapes. From its medieval origins around Dam Square to the tranquil banks of the canals, not to mention the historic districts, every step transports you to another era.

‘Customs, simplicity and equality were the same in Amsterdam as in Sparta, and the frugality was even greater,’ Voltaire declared in the 17th century. Today, the capital has become the cultural and financial centre of the Netherlands. A city designed first and foremost for cyclists and pedestrians, it boasts 165 canals and over 1,200 bridges! An almost limitless playground. Accessible to all, as Amsterdam is geographically one of the flattest cities in the world.

A bit of history

The city’s origins lie in a simple dam, the famous Dam, which gave Amsterdam its name. In the 13th century, on the orders of the Count of Holland, a dam was built to hold back the waters of the Amstel. This project not only protected the village from flooding but also created the first port area downstream. The place quickly became a centre of trade and commerce.

The dam, combined with a bridge, thus marked the beginning of the city’s history. Economic and social life developed around it, and Amsterdam very quickly established itself as a key hub. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the areas surrounding the dam were filled in and transformed into major thoroughfares. Today, Dam Square, in the heart of the city, is a must-visit destination. It is here that the Royal Palace stands – formerly the 17th-century town hall – which still bears witness to the power of the trading city during the ‘Golden Age’.

For a runner, this square is an excellent starting point: it links the historic centre with the modern districts and offers a snapshot of what Amsterdam stands for: tradition, history and vibrancy. Every stride taken from the Dam is therefore a journey through several centuries of urban history.

Along the canals

It’s impossible to go for a run in Amsterdam without following its famous canals. The city is often nicknamed the ‘Venice of the North’, but it has a charm all of its own. Over 100 kilometres of waterways wind their way through the streets, forming a picturesque network that has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010.

Running along the waterfront is, first and foremost, about soaking up the unique atmosphere that defines Amsterdam. But be careful: the city has more bikes than people, and cycle lanes are sacrosanct! Runners must therefore take care not to find themselves in the middle of a stream of cyclists in a hurry.

As you stroll along the cobbled streets beside the canals, you’ll come across a multitude of moored houseboats. Many have been converted into hotels or residential properties, offering a unique way of life that blends modernity with maritime tradition.

Another detail catches the eye: the narrow, tall and colourful houses lining the waterfront. This architectural feature has its origins in the tax system introduced in the 17th century: residents were taxed according to the width of their façade. As a result, the buildings are narrow but often deep and ingeniously laid out. Some even appear to lean, adding to the unique charm of the urban landscape.

As you run along the canals, your journey will also be punctuated by sensory delights: flower stalls brimming with tulips – the symbol of the Netherlands – and cheese shops where golden wheels of Gouda or Edam take centre stage. This lively atmosphere makes every run a stroll that is both athletic and cultural.

Running through the old neighbourhoods

Whilst the centre of Amsterdam is now an open and progressive metropolis, its old neighbourhoods retain the spirit of a former fishing village. Walking through these narrow streets, you can sense the layers of history and the city’s evolution.

The De Wallen district, better known as the ‘Red Light District’, is undoubtedly the most controversial but also one of the most visited. Famous for its illuminated shop windows featuring nude women, it epitomises the tolerance and freedom that characterise Amsterdam. But beyond this scandalous image, the district also boasts a wealth of imposing medieval buildings, such as the Oude Kerk (the Old Church), built in the 13th century and surrounded by small traditional houses.

Not far from there, the famous coffee shops – a symbol of Dutch alternative culture – stand in stark contrast to the classical architecture. Runners will encounter an eclectic mix of tourists, artists and locals there, all of whom contribute to the city’s unique atmosphere.

Another must-see is the canal belt, or Grachtengordel. This concentric network of canals was developed during the Dutch Golden Age, in the 17th century, when Amsterdam was one of the world’s largest ports and a major financial centre. The town houses that still stand there today are richly decorated, with their carved gables and tall windows. Running through this romantic setting almost feels like travelling back in time, between the splendour of the past and the vibrancy of the present.

Finally, a tour of the old neighbourhoods wouldn’t be complete without a stop at the Albert Cuyp Market in the De Pijp neighbourhood. Even if it means slowing your pace a little, the sight of its colourful stalls, its stroopwafels (syrup waffles) and its lively, down-to-earth atmosphere is well worth the stop.
