The most beautiful routes to take in autumn
Autumn has arrived and cities are gradually shifting into a different gear. The temperatures are becoming more pleasant for walking or running, the light is softer, and the days invite you to make the most of the outdoors one last time before winter sets in. But every destination experiences this season in its own way: here, it’s the colours of the palaces and gardens that draw visitors; there, a traditional festival or cultural event adds a whole new dimension to your stay. And in the Southern Hemisphere, the European autumn even gives way to spring! From Asia to the Americas, via Europe and Africa, JOOKS brings you ten cities to explore on foot this season.
Seoul

Autumn is undoubtedly the best time to explore the South Korean capital. The summer humidity gives way to vast blue skies and crisp air, perfect for walking. In these ideal conditions, the royal palaces of the Joseon dynasty, the monumental gates and the secret gardens are draped in a blanket of russet and golden leaves. To appreciate this magnificent setting, our route ‘Seoul in History’ is the perfect choice. As you wander through the city’s various neighbourhoods, this audio-guided tour links the relics of the past with contemporary museums, revealing the city’s transformations in the incomparably clear light of autumn.
Tokyo

In Japan, the end of the year is inextricably linked to kōyō, the tradition of celebrating the splendour of the trees. In Tokyo, the Japanese maples turning a brilliant red offer a poetic respite amidst the hustle and bustle of city life. It is precisely to capture this unique balance between serenity and modernity that we have designed the route ‘The Japanese Capital’. Stretching 18 kilometres, this route first takes you on a journey of discovery through peaceful temples surrounded by golden foliage, before plunging you into the futuristic hustle and bustle of Shibuya and Harajuku. The autumnal colours add an extra touch to this striking contrast that is unique to the metropolis.
Amsterdam

It is when the summer crowds have dispersed and the light grows low that the Dutch capital reveals its true, intimate character. In autumn, the coppery reflections of the trees lining the canals are mirrored on the water, inviting you to slow your pace. Our route ‘The Canals of Amsterdam’ makes the most of this gentle seasonal atmosphere. As you let yourself be guided along the water, you’ll discover the city’s iconic landmarks at your own pace, from the Anne Frank House to the Royal Palace, not forgetting Dam Square. The brick façades and historic bridges take on a whole new look bathed in these golden hues.
Vienna

As soon as the first chill of autumn sets in, Vienna regains its cosy atmosphere, which is particularly conducive to daily strolls that we love to round off in the warmth of a traditional café. The parks and gardens in the city centre take on their most beautiful golden hues, offering a bucolic respite amidst an impressive architectural heritage. Why not treat yourself to our route ‘Imperial Vienna’ to immerse yourself in this majestic setting? From the iconic buildings of the Hofburg to the Opera House, via the shaded avenues of the Volksgarten, this itinerary takes you on a journey in the footsteps of the Habsburg dynasty, enhanced by the colours of the season.

Buenos Aires

What if autumn became an opportunity to rediscover spring? In the Southern Hemisphere, the seasons are reversed, and September marks the rebirth of the Argentine capital. The parks are turning green again and the first jacaranda trees in bloom line the boulevards with shades of purple. To make the most of these spring-like conditions, perfect for a leisurely stroll, simply set off on our route ‘The Capital of Argentina’ – a 17-kilometre walk through the city. From the bustling shops of Calle Florida to the museums and elegant buildings of the Recoleta district, it’s the perfect way to savour the warmth of the fine weather on the other side of the world.
Cape Town
