A breathtaking natural heritage

The island of Noirmoutier is above all famous for its generous and varied natural environment. The salt marshes, a veritable tableau vivant, are one of the island's most emblematic features. These geometric expanses, designed by the salt workers over the centuries, offer a fascinating spectacle, especially at sunset, when the sky and water seem to merge in a palette of golden and pink colours.

The Bois de la Chaise is another must-see. This enchanting spot, renowned for its centuries-old holm oaks and beaches lined with white cabins, invites you to relax and take a stroll. Fans of flora and fauna will be amazed by the ecological wealth of this area, which is home to numerous species of migratory birds.

In the north of the island, the Müllembourg nature reserve covers more than 48 hectares. This biodiversity sanctuary is a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers, where thousands of birds can be observed throughout the year. Signposted paths allow you to explore this unique ecosystem in peace.

Finally, the Noirmoutier coastline offers an exceptional playground for sea lovers. Beaches such as Les Dames and Luzéron are perfect for recharging your batteries, while the fishing zones offer an introduction to an activity that is emblematic of the region. The tides reveal a constantly changing landscape, ideal for walks between rocks and fine sand.

A journey through time

The history of the island of Noirmoutier dates back to Roman times, but it is above all marked by the arrival of monks in the 7th century, who played a central role in the island's development. The Château de Noirmoutier, built in the 12th century, is one of the most emblematic monuments of this period. This imposing fortress, which today houses a museum, offers a glimpse into the island's turbulent past, from the Viking invasions to the French Revolution.

Saint-Philbert church, dating from the 11th century, is another example of this rich heritage. Its Romanesque architecture and crypt housing the relics of Saint Philbert attract visitors in search of spirituality and history.

Travelling around Noirmoutier also means discovering its charming villages, such as l'Herbaudière, a former fishing port that has become a marina, or Barbâtre, famous for its majestic dunes and historic mills. Each corner of the island tells its own story, from maritime traditions to island culture.

The narrow streets of Noirmoutier-en-l'Île, the island's capital, invite you to stroll between the white houses with blue shutters and craft shops. The lively, colourful local market is a veritable institution, where you can pick up local produce and chat with the locals.

A gourmet and festive island

Noirmoutier is also a destination of choice for epicureans. Its production of sea salt, particularly fleur de sel, is renowned the world over. You can visit the salt marshes and meet the salt workers to learn more about this age-old craft.

Another unmissable speciality is the bonnotte, an emblematic potato grown only on the island. Harvested by hand and blessed with a unique flavour thanks to the sandy, salty soil, it is a firm favourite with gourmets. Every year, the Bonnotte Festival celebrates this culinary marvel in a festive and convivial atmosphere.

On the seaside, Noirmoutier's oysters are a real treat, as are the fresh fish and seafood served up in local restaurants. Be sure to stop off at one of the markets to sample these exceptional products.

At the same time, the island's craftsmen offer sweet specialities such as the famous flan maraîchin or Vendée shortbread, perfect with a coffee on the terrace.

Finally, the island is punctuated by numerous festive events. As well as the Fête de la Bonnotte, held every spring, music festivals and lively evenings in the port of Noirmoutier-en-l'île attract locals and visitors alike during the summer. The traditional regattas, which bring the waters around the island to life, are also a spectacle not to be missed.
