Selected by Condé Nast Traveler as one of the best places to visit in Europe in 2024, Antwerp is a cosmopolitan city boasting an exceptional cultural, historical and architectural heritage. Beyond its port and diamond trade, this Flemish city is brimming with museums, historic buildings and architectural marvels, all set in an idyllic setting between the green banks of the Scheldt and the Galgenweel and its many parks and gardens. But Antwerp is also a modern and vibrant city, with its trendy bars and restaurants, avant-garde fashion designers and numerous works of street art. With JOOKS, set off to explore the city of diamonds with our 10 audio-guided tours!

Originating as a small port near a jetty, inhabited by a modest, Romance-speaking population in the 7th century, the city of Antwerp owes its rise largely to its strategic location on the Scheldt. Even today, a third of Belgium’s exports pass through this Flemish city, making Antwerp the second-largest port in Europe.
Although the town experienced a period of decline between the late 16th and early 17th centuries, it has since bounced back and now welcomes many visitors every year, drawn not only by its historical and architectural treasures but also by its shopping, fashion and design.
Diamonds, architecture and culture
Since the 19th century, Antwerp’s history and economy have been inextricably linked to diamonds. Thanks to its geographical location and the excellent reputation of its cutters, the city quickly established itself as a key hub in the diamond trade. Several of our tours will take you through the narrow streets of the diamond district, nestled in the heart of the city, which is home to 1,700 diamond companies and 4,500 diamond dealers. Considered one of the world’s largest diamond trading centres, this district bears witness to the important role played by Antwerp in the diamond industry. For the more curious, do pop into the Diamond Pavilion, the MAS, or the DIVA Museum to learn more about these gems.

As you wander through the city’s streets, you cannot help but admire its eclectic and vibrant architecture. Stone, iron, glass, gilding… Antwerp’s architecture reflects its history, culture and ever-evolving identity. Its harmonious blend of historical and contemporary elements offers visitors a captivating journey through time and design, making it a destination that appeals to both history buffs and lovers of modern aesthetics.
As well as being the diamond capital of the world, Antwerp is also a leading cultural centre. Its art scene is shaped by the legacy of the Baroque painter Peter Paul Rubens and by the Royal Museum of Fine Arts, which houses Flemish and Dutch masterpieces. Antwerp also shines in the world of fashion, known for having nurtured the innovative designers of the ‘Antwerp Six’ and for maintaining a vibrant fashion district. The Royal Academy of Fine Arts and the ModeMuseum contribute to the city’s fashion identity, whilst events such as the Antwerp Fashion Festival celebrate its design prowess.
Street art
Despite its rich history, Antwerp is not just a historic city. Street art is now as much a part of the ‘City of Diamonds’ as Brabo, the Scheldt and the Tower of Our Lady. From the tags of graffiti pioneers to the huge murals by street artists, the city is a playground and an open-air museum for lovers of urban art. The Zomerfabriek, a creative hub, is home to Antwerp’s iconic mural by street artist Gijs Vanhee, a celebration of colour and culture.

The city’s commitment to street art is also evident in its involvement in initiatives such as the Tizarte street art festival, where international artists come together to leave their mark on the walls of Antwerp. From thought-provoking murals to playful installations, Antwerp’s street scenes are a celebration of the city’s modern creative energy. JOOKS offers two routes that will take you on a journey to discover the masterpieces adorning the city’s walls. Keep your eyes peeled!
A green oasis
Beyond its bustling streets and historic monuments, Antwerp surprises visitors with its abundance of green spaces. The city’s many parks and gardens reflect its commitment to providing ample green spaces for residents and visitors alike. Rivierenhof Park, a vast green oasis, offers a haven of relaxation and leisure, featuring, among other things, a zoo, an open-air theatre and a rose garden. From lakes and canals to wooded paths, this park invites you to unwind in the heart of nature.
For a touch of magic, follow our ‘Three Parks for the Price of One’ route, which will take you through Middelheim Park, an open-air museum that seamlessly blends art installations with lush landscapes. Antwerp’s commitment to sustainable living is also evident in its urban farming initiatives, such as the Rooftop Farm and EcoHuis Antwerpen, which showcase innovative ways of combining city life with nature. These pockets of greenery in the heart of the city offer a welcome respite from Antwerp’s bustling urban atmosphere.

If you’re looking for a bit of a break, why not enjoy a breath of fresh air by the water’s edge? The Scheldt and the Galgenweel play a central role in our route ‘Running Along the Water’. Thanks to two unique passages through a tunnel under the river, you can explore both the leafy left bank and the beautiful architecture of the Scheldt quays on the right bank.

This was such an enjoyable read. Your way of describing the experience really makes the place feel alive. I especially liked the details you included throughout. It reminded me of a profile I came across here CPS Game, which also shares simple, quick browser-based games you can try without downloading anything.
