Wine-growing heritage

Vilafranca del Penedès is often referred to as the capital of Catalan wine. For centuries, the town and its surrounding region have produced wines renowned for their quality and diversity. Wine-growing in the Penedès dates back to Roman times, but it was not until the Middle Ages that Vilafranca became a major wine-producing centre. The Mediterranean climate, marked by hot, dry summers and mild winters, together with the limestone soils, provide ideal conditions for growing vines. Among the region's most emblematic grape varieties is xarel-lo, a white variety used in the production of still wines and cava, the sparkling wine that is the pride of Catalonia.

Cava, produced using the traditional method of secondary fermentation in the bottle, is one of the region's greatest successes, and Vilafranca is at the centre of this production. Prestigious wineries such as Freixenet and Codorníu are based nearby, and many small local producers also help to make the Penedès a benchmark for sparkling wine. Every September, the town organises the Festa Major and the Fira del Gall, two events that celebrate not only local culture, but also the wine production that is such an integral part of Vilafranca's identity. Visitors can taste local wines, watch demonstrations of the grape harvest and meet the producers who keep these age-old skills alive.

For an immersive way to discover the Penedès wine region, the Camí del Vi (Wine Trail) offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the region's vineyards on foot or by bike. This 3.5-kilometre trail, which starts at the Vilafranca Tourist Office, allows walkers to discover 8 stations highlighting the relationship between the town and the world of wine, while enjoying the magnificent landscapes of the Penedès.

Historical and architectural heritage

As well as its vineyards, Vilafranca del Penedès boasts a rich historical and architectural heritage, bearing witness to its importance down the ages. Founded in the 12th century, the town has long been a major political and economic centre in Catalonia. Strolling along its cobbled streets, you can admire well-preserved medieval buildings that tell the story of Vilafranca.

One of the city's jewels is undoubtedly the Basilica of Santa Maria, an impressive Gothic building that dominates the old town. Built in the 13th century, this church is a striking example of Catalan Gothic architecture, with its richly decorated portal and stained glass windows illuminating the interior. Inside, visitors can discover works of sacred art, as well as the tomb of Pere III, a King of Aragon and Count of Barcelona.

Right next to the basilica is the Royal Palace, another of Vilafranca's landmark buildings. This palace served as the residence of Catalan kings in the Middle Ages and now houses the Museum of Wine Cultures of Catalonia, also known as VINSEUM. The museum offers a fascinating insight into the history of winegrowing in Catalonia, with interactive exhibitions and wine tastings. For lovers of wine and history, this is a must-see visit that will give you a better understanding of the cultural and economic importance of wine production for the region.

The streets of the old town are also full of colourful little houses, picturesque squares and lively markets that transport visitors back in time. The Mercat de Vilafranca, the town's central market, is an ideal place to discover local produce, from cheeses to cured meats and, of course, wine. The market is a meeting point for the locals, and perfectly reflects the vitality of the town.

Traditions and festivities

Vilafranca del Penedès is not just a historic town or a wine-growing area; it is also a lively place, punctuated by festivities and traditions that bring the whole community together. One of the most famous is undoubtedly the Festa Major, held in August. This festival is considered to be one of the oldest and most traditional in Catalonia, dating back to the 14th century. For several days, the city comes alive with parades, folk dances, concerts and fireworks. But what really sets this festival apart is the tradition of the castells.

Castells are impressive human towers, formed by groups of people known as castellers. These towers can be several storeys high, and the most daring climbers are often children, who scale the shoulders of their elders to reach the top. The construction of these towers is a symbol of the solidarity and community spirit of the people of Vilafranca. Every year, the town hosts one of the largest gatherings of castellers in Catalonia, attracting participants and spectators from all over the world. This tradition, listed as intangible cultural heritage by UNESCO, is a striking example of how Vilafranca preserves and values its cultural roots.

As well as the Festa Major, Vilafranca is alive with other events throughout the year. The Fira del Gall, held in December, is another landmark celebration, centred around poultry and local gastronomic products. This event combines agricultural fairs, cooking competitions and, of course, wine tasting. For lovers of local gastronomy and traditions, it's an ideal opportunity to discover the unique flavours of the Penedès while enjoying the festive atmosphere.

Finally, Vilafranca is also known for its commitment to innovation and sustainability. The town has moved with the times, incorporating modern practices into wine production and promoting responsible tourism. Many of the region's vineyards now adopt organic or biodynamic growing methods, reflecting a growing awareness of environmental impact. This desire to preserve nature while continuing to produce quality wines illustrates the spirit of innovation that characterises Vilafranca del Penedès.
