Berlin

From Museum Island to Alexanderplatz to the Brandenburg Gate, running through Berlin will take you through seven centuries of German history. From the Brandenburg Electorate to the fall of the Wall, every street corner in the city centre is a reminder of a significant event.

Founded in the 13th century, Berlin is a leading cultural and artistic city in the world. The city encompasses several rivers, canals, parks and lakes and a wealth of old and classical architecture. Berlin developed from its historic centre, the Nikolaiviertel, and from the absorption of neighbouring towns. As a result of this decentralised development, Germany's capital city owns many points of interest, both in its centre and on its outskirts. From the Brandenburg Gate, now the emblem of the city and of the reunification of the two Germanies, you can walk to the memorial to the murdered Jews of Europe. From there, walk along Unter den Linden, the city's main avenue, to the Museum Island, a monumental complex on the northern half of the Spreeinsel. Or, if you feel like it, run past the famous Checkpoint Charlie. Berlin, which became the capital of Germany again in 1990, still bears the marks of the Soviet era and the Wall, the remains of which are still visible.
