Marseille

A major trading centre and port of the Mediterranean since antiquity, Marseille is picturesque and multicultural. From the Old Port to the Bonne Mère, running around Marseille is almost like embarking on a journey through time and space.

The oldest city in France, Marseille was founded in ancient times around 600 BC by Greek sailors and merchants from Phocaea, located in present-day Turkey. Since then, Marseille has been an important port of trade and transit. During the colonial period, and particularly during the 19th century, it grew considerably, becoming a prosperous industrial and trading city. Marseille is a very hilly city, with streets that are sometimes very steep. Indeed, he highest district of Marseille, Les Trois-Lucs, reaches an altitude of 242 metres, and the highest point in Marseille is the Étoile summit at 652 m in the massif of the same name. This is a real challenge for urban runners and hikers! Since 1995, the districts of Arenc and La Joliette, marked by their industrial past, as well as the Porte d'Aix district, have been the subject of one of the most important urban renovations in Europe. As a result, walking along the Docks, at the foot of the MuCEM or around the Porte d'Aix now offers the pleasure of discovering this ambitious urban project.
