Zurich
Ranked as the most expensive city in the world in 2012, Zurich is the main international economic and financial centre of Switzerland. Running in Zurich will take you through a variety of landscapes, between river, its huge lake and historic city.
Located on the eponymous lake, Zurich is a popular holiday destination for the Swiss, German and Austrian bourgeoisie. This is due to the beauty of its view and its historic centre, as well as the mildness of its climate. In addition, the environment is both lush and clean. The river Limmat, which flows through the city, has been named the cleanest urban river in Europe. The people of Zurich are therefore used to swimming in it, right in the heart of the city, in the summer, which may seem unlikely to the inhabitants of other European metropolises! Running, swimming or cycling along the Limmat is possible, but the historic heart of the city is not to be missed. Several churches are worth a visit, especially the Fraumünster, with its stained glass windows designed by Marc Chagall and Augusto Giacometti. The Fraumünster was built in the 9th century by King Ludwig the German, which makes it an important historical building. Or the Grossmünster church, which was the centre of the Protestant reformation in German-speaking Switzerland under Ulrich Zwingli.Depending on the time of year when you start your run, you can unexpectedly discover one of the many events that enliven the city. For example, the Sechseläuten at the end of April celebrates the start of winter, symbolised by the Böögg, a snowman who is cremated on a large bonfire at Sechseläutenplatz. The Böögg is filled with explosives and the main charge is placed in the head. Traditionally, the time between the lighting of the pyre and the explosion of the head is timed. If this time is short, the summer will be warm, if it is long, the long resistance of the Böögg means a cold summer.
